Manufacturing artwork and an editable design carry different facts

A native PCB design can associate pads with footprints, pins and named nets, alongside placement, routing and design rules. Gerber artwork primarily describes material on individual layers. Even when attributes are present, they do not guarantee a complete original CAD project.

A copper shape that looks like a pad is not evidence of its original library footprint or pin identity. Converting artwork into a KiCad representation does not automatically turn every shape into a connected track or reusable component.

Prepare a complete Gerber ZIP

Collect copper, solder mask, silkscreen and board-profile files along with the Excellon drills. Include all inner copper layers for a multilayer board. Keep descriptive filenames and any job metadata so layer mapping can be checked.

Use files from one board revision and export. Do not combine a recent copper set with older drill coordinates. If plated and non-plated holes were exported separately, keep both files.

Choose KiCad, ODB++ or IPC-2581 for the next handoff

A KiCad representation is useful for inspecting supported geometry in a PCB environment. ODB++ and IPC-2581 offer structured manufacturing exchanges, but repackaging Gerber into those formats does not invent missing component identities or connectivity.

When the starting package is already ODB++ or IPC-2581, explicit source component, pin and net associations may support partial CAD recovery. That result still depends on the supported records and geometry in the uploaded package.

Verify material before attempting design changes

Inspect the report to distinguish recovered CAD objects from retained artwork. If you need to move components, reroute nets or change the schematic, request the original CAD project whenever possible. Keep the source package as a reference throughout review.

  • Compare outline dimensions, scale and layer order against the source.
  • Overlay or inspect copper and mask on each side; check clear areas and polarity.
  • Check hole centres, diameters and plating against the drill set.
  • Verify electrical identities explicitly instead of inferring them from nearby shapes.
